For those of you who don’t know Dr. Joseph Mercola, the following is a quick bio.
Dr. Mercola is an osteopathic physician and until recently operated the Dr. Mercola Natural Health Center in Schaumbug, IL. Dr. Mercola also started an alternative health website over 15 years ago.
Mercola.com publishes article and video content concerning alternative health topics and he has never been afraid to speak out against controversial issues such as the dangers of commercial foods, the over-prescription and dangers of drugs, the dangers of vaccines and more. His “voice-in-the-wilderness” contrarian style and sheer volume of content quickly made Mercola.com the most popular alternative health website in the world.
Dr. Mercola has also authored three, New York Times Best Selling books and in the past ten years has launched an impressive nutritional supplement line of products.
SuperFoodDrinks.org has always had a lot of respect for Dr. Mercola and much of the research we conduct for our own content was performed on Mercola.com.
We were pleased to be contacted by a representative of Dr. Mercola’s products division and asked if we could do a review of Dr. Mercola’s Organic Greens formula. She also offered to send us a sample of greens powder along with some other products. She made it clear that we must disclose the fact that we received some freebies in exchange for writing the review, and is more evidence of the integrity of the Mercola organization. (We would have done the review without the free products by the way, but why ruin a good thing?)
Without further ado, the following Dr. Mercola Organic Greens review should help you make an educated decision about purchasing it.
Overview
We need to make it immediately clear that Organic Greens is not a meal replacement type product like Total Living Drink Greens, Athletic Greens or Shakeology. This is a meal supplement that is a lower potent, lower priced formula designed to give you the extra nutrients from greens that you are missing from the diet. It is thoughtfully crafted with borderline obsessive attention to detail in terms of the chosen ingredients and origin of ingredients.

Our initial thoughts are that we love the carefully selected ingredients. There is a reason behind the combinations. We also appreciate the well laid out label that organizes the ingredients in their respective categories.
It’s no surprise that Dr. Mercola chose to go 100% certified organic on everything in the jar, as there is myriad articles on his site that talk about the benefits of eating organic foods.
There are a couple of concerns, however. First, we are a little surprised that the formula uses whole plant powders as the source of the grasses, vegetables and algae. Whole food powders are exactly that… grinding up the whole plant and making a powder. We much prefer plant juice extracts as the source of superfood ingredients. This is literally juicing the plant and making a powder from the juice. This provides far more nutrient-density as the chlorophyll and phytonutrients are predominantly found in the juice of the plant.
Secondly, one complete serving is only delivering 3 grams of total nutrition. This is not a lot of nutrition, which is not a big problem, if you understand that this is a supplement as opposed to a meal replacement. But what is a little disappointing is that there’s only a combined total of 20 mgs of Chlorella and Spirulina. This is a meager amount at best.
Reading through the Organic Greens product page on the Mercola.com website, we were able to perhaps understand Dr. Mercola’s thinking in going this direction with the whole plant powders and paltry amounts of the algae. The answer is taste.
He emphasizes the importance of choosing a green drink that you enjoy drinking. Using juice extracts and high potencies of algae are great ideas for dramatically building your health, but these two factors will hugely impact the taste of the powder. Especially the algae… it is one of the biggest challenges faced by green drink powder manufacturers –overcoming the swampy, fishy taste of algae.
I think Dr. Mercola’s point of view is that if a green drink powder sits on a shelf and is not being used or reordered, what’s the point?
Taste of Dr. Mercola’s Organic Greens
So let’s talk about the taste, obviously this was important to the makers. We first mixed one 3-gram scoop in lukewarm water. We always do this first because it will expose the taste for what it really is. Even with nothing but room temp water Organic Greens had a very pleasant, stevia-sweetned taste with a hint of tea.
It blended fine, simply mixing it with a spoon and it wasn’t gritty. Overall, a very pleasant tasting green drink. Bear in mind however, that our team here at SFD taste green drinks every day it seems like. We’ve been doing this for years and have developed a thick-skin when it comes to taste and texture. We may not be the best focus group for taste but we liked the taste very much.
Cost and Value
Look, Dr. Mercola’s Organic Greens is a supplement. It’s not a powerhouse formula like the meal replacement green drinks on this site. It’s not even a mid-range green drink like those that have 8-12 grams of nutrition per serving.
But we believe this was by design. It’s goal is to help folks get more alkalizing nutrients and to make it as easy as possible. The price reflects this goal as well.
A 2-month supply of Dr. Mercola’s Organic Greens is $29.97 or $.50 a serving. This is by far the lowest price green drink we’ve reviewed. And to be fair, at $.17 per gram, it is the lowest price green drink per gram.
And remember, you are getting 100% certified organic ingredients, no fillers, powerful antioxidants and more. The product is also gluten-free and no ingredients have been genetically modified.
Bottom Line
We are big fans of Dr. Mercola and what he stands for. We love his website and spend a lot of time there.
Organic Greens is not going to compete with the “big-boy” drinks on this site because it is an entirely different product.
Organic Greens is for people who just want to increase their vegetable intake without having to go to farmer’s markets twice a week and who don’t want to bother with juicing or blending. They don’t want to spend $50 – $100 on a product that they think tastes like pond water.
If this is you, then Dr. Mercola’s Organic Greens is the product for you. And rest assured, the company that makes it is pure class and they’ve made it extremely affordable.
