Greens Plus Superfood Raw (GPSF), by Greens Plus is a mid-to-low range superfood green drink powder. The following Greens Plus Superfood Raw review will take an in depth look at this product by examining the ingredients, the potencies, the cost and the taste and determine it’s overall value.
Product Name: Greens Plus
Company Name: Greens Plus
Product Description: Superfood Green Drink Powder with Probiotics
Rating: 8.5 out of 10
The superfood section of Greens Plus Superfood Raw can be broken down into three categories… Superfoods, Sea Vegetables and SuperFruits.
Barley Grass, Wheat Grass, Alfala Grass, Oat Grass, Dandelion Leaf, Red Beet Juice. (They list Stevia leaf under the superfood section, but this is used as a sweetener.) We are pleased that all of these ingredients are certified organic. Apparently, all of these superfoods are in powder form instead of juice extracts except for the Red Beet Juice. We prefer juice extracts to powders due to the higher concentrates of phytonutrients in juice.
The total potency of all the superfoods is just over 5 grams.
The 2 grams of algae included in the sea vegetable section include Spirulina, Chlorella, Nova Scotia Dulse and Dunaliella Salina. Though Spirulina, Chlorella and Dulse are commonly found in many superfood green drinks, Dunaliella Salina is rarely found in them. DS is loaded with antioxidants and is a tremendous source of beta-carotene.
The .5 grams of the three fruits included in the formula are Apple Peel, Acai Berry and Acerola Cherry.
The 14 ingredients in the superfood section collectively provide just below 8 grams of nutrition. They are fairly standard ingredients found in superfood drinks (except the Dunaliella Salina algae). We love that they are organic but are a little disappointed that the sources are powders instead of juice extracts.
SUPERFOODS SCORE: 8.9
The “nutritional section” covers the ingredients that are not classified as superfoods. In GPSF the entire formula consists of superfoods except the probiotics. In this case, each serving of GPSF contains 200 mg of probiotics.
We would like to see digestive enzymes (important for assimilation of superfoods and other vitamins and minerals), perhaps an expanded antioxidant ingredient list, and maybe even some herbs for cleansing and detoxifying.
NUTRITIONAL PANEL SCORE: 8.0
Greens Plus Superfood Raw is not the best tasting green drink we’ve tried. We have pretty thick skins when it comes to green drinks, having tried so many of them over the years. The problem with GPSR is the swampy algae taste. Considering that the algae contribute 25% of the entire formula, this is not surprising.
Typically, green drink powders will contain more ingredients and even some protein that helps to dilute the pungent taste of the algae.
If taste is a problem, mix this powder with fresh fruit, yogurt and organic fruit juices and make a smoothie. Many people who are trying to shed some unwanted LB’s, will make a green drink smoothie for weight loss.
TASTE SCORE: 7.9
Value is the hardest aspect of doing a product review. The reason is that they are all so different that it’s challenging to compare apples to apples. (Pun not intended.)
Some green drinks are intentionally developed to be just a superfood powder without all the other stuff like probiotics, enzymes, antioxidants, etc. There’s nothing wrong with this as long as the price for the product is appropriate for it being one-dimensional.
This is primarily the case with Greens Plus Superfood Raw.
Each serving of Greens Plus Superfood Raw delivers 8 grams of total nutrition. This is on the lower end of most green drinks we review but it’s all relative to the cost per serving. A 30-serving canister of GPSR is only $26, breaking down to just $.87 per serving. This is actually a very good value for the money.
VALUE SCORE: 9.3
PROS & CONS
- 14 total superfoods
- Excellent algae profile, including Dunaliella Salina (rare and highly beneficial)
- Extremely good value at just $.87 per serving
- At 8 grams per serving there are many higher potent green drinks
- Doesn’t contain digestive enzymes, additional antioxidants or herbs
- Tastes swampy
Overall, Greens Plus Superfood Raw is a decent green powder drink that delivers on the superfood section, contains probiotics, but leaves out some common ingredients such as herbs, fiber, antioxidants and digestive enzymes. It is very similar to Amazing Grass Green Superfood.
We like the fact that the superfoods are certified organic. We love that each serving is only $.87, truly one of the better values in the marketplace.
This is a mid-range superfood drink that has quality ingredients and delivers a good value. There are plenty of higher potent, more comprehensive products but you will pay more for these. Think of GPSR as an entry-level economy car. It’s not going to perform like a luxury car but it’ll get you from point A to point B without breaking the bank.
